1952 Schwarzwald WII AM/FM

Hello,

I am restoring a Schwarzwald WII AM/FM 7 valve radio which was recently imported into the UK from Germany. I have replaced all its SABA black capacitors all of which were leaky and a couple of valves and the set now works very well on FM but not so well on MW, LW and SW. So AM needs realignment and I have the alignment procedure in German, and Babel Fish manages to translate most of it into English but I am stuck on at least a couple of sentences.

The first two lines 1. a) and b) read ......

a) Ca. -4,5 Volt auf Regelspannung (Punkt R und Masse) drucken
b) Lautsprecher und NF-Spannungsmesser an Ausgangsbuchsen anschliessen

Can anyone here translate these two sentences please, or maybe someone has the alignment procedure in English ?

I found one unusual feature in this particular set, neither of the LW trimmers shown in the RF alignment procedure diagram were ever fitted to this set, instead just two fixed value capacitors fitted .......

Hello Howard,

b) connect both the speaker and the voltmeter to the output connector
a) there should be about -4.5V AGC voltage between ground and terminal "R"

Well done, Achim! Now that you gave us the English translation of a) I think I understood. I never understood the german words of this alignment instruction!

Perhaps one should point out that this DC voltage of -4.5V (+ connected to ground, - connected to "R") is fed from outside e.g. from an external power supply to terminal "R" and it's not the result of any alignment process.

Ah, so that's what those sentences say ! I'll get on and write out the rest of the alignment procedure in English now.

The AGC voltage is OK.

Hello again,

Unfortunately Babel Fish doesn't translate a lot of the German words that I have copied from the alignment procedure and keyed in. I am unable to enter some German characters too, eg: the "u" in "uber" has two dots above it, that character is not on my keyboard and Babel Fish won't translate "uber".

I give up ! The Schwarzwald WII isn't working very well but it will have to remain as it is. It is better to leave it working badly than to guess how to realign it and risk wrecking it.

Hello again,

We have completed restoring the Schwarzwald II and it works very well and sounds excellent on FM. It needed all its black capacitors and a couple of electrolytics replacing, and its EM4, ECH81 and EF85 were also replaced. We checked the AM IF and it was still spot on at 472 kHz so realignment was not necessary. RF realignment likewise was unnecessary.

As this model has only a 220v AC mains setting we had to fit a couple of resistors to drop the UK 230-240v mains voltage down to 220v to avoid overrunning its valves - we used existing holes in the chassis to mount them so avoided drilling any holes.

We are very impressed with this radio ! Many thanks for your help.
