Thanks for the explanation. It makes sense now, though it seems over complicated. I have a Dorchester radiogram which has 2x ELL800 push pull - I guess the complexity is still great but different. The muting switch - one of the nice SABA touches then.. that makes sense - better hope it doesn't fail short I was looking at one of these sets that is for sale in the UK, but as it cannot decode stereo FM, I may give it a miss. Interesting anyhow to review the schematic - the Automatic tuning engine l…

I am looking at the schematic for the Freiburg 100 Automatic Stereo and have a few questions about some oddities in the design.. Firstly, am I right to conclude that there is no way of adding a stereo decoder, and that in FM it can only be operated in mono? Secondly - there is an extra tube in the Right channel audio path using the EBC91 as a low gain inverting amplifier - why is this done? it seems oddly extravagant to use a triode +2 diodes to exchange the phase of the channel - why not just r…

Thanks for the useful info - that explains the winding descriptions. Is there a source for standard coil formers ? A look on ebay didn't show anything. I have used some old Toko 10k inductors as formers but I suspect they are smaller than what is referred to here. thanks again, Kevin.

Because I am slightly mad, I am modifying a valve portable radio to have an extra FM waveband. I have picked up some DC96 for the front end oscillator and the data from Valvo on radiomuseum.org provides a schematic with transformer winding specifications. saba-forum.dl2jas.com/index.php/Attachment/3208/ I'm having trouble with the translation of these instructions, as terms like Cu SS, and Cu vers. mean nothing to google Also I'm not sure if the intention is for tightly or loosely coupled windin…

Hans, thanks for the clear response. So all I need to do now is wait for the correct decoder to show up. But this could take a long time? If I look at the schematics for E14 types and E16 types, they are very similar. The 38kHz doubler is different - on EI14 T2 is just a tuned amplifier with fixed biasing and the output rectifier is ground referenced. On EI 16 the rectifier is biased slightly positive through R13 and there is an overall level control from Gr11 to the base of T2 via R9. E16 also …

Its a different chassis. Please find attached some photos. The schematic covers: Dorchester 16 (my model) Excelsior 16 2560US (for US market) FM is setup for 50us de-emphasis, as you would expect as the unit lives in the UK. There is a 9pin socket for the decoder with the bypass plug installed and no decoder. many thanks, Kevin. PS we're still in the Eu, and if I had my way we would stay in..

Hello, and Guten Tag, I have a SABA Dorchester 16 radiogram (musiktruhe) which I have restored to working order. It has no stereo decoder and I am looking to find one. I wanted to ask which decoders will work with my radio chassis. There is an EI14 (14/I) decoder available and I have also looked at the EI 16 decoders on radiomuseum.orgThey seem similar although the signal levels in the schematics are different. Can I fit the EI14 to my dorchester or will the gain be wrong? The pinout and power s…
