Chassisrätsel
BeitragYou're welcome Wouldn't it be nice if this knowledge were important? What a pity that chassis for sale has no dial glass. It must have been broken in shipping. Disaster SABA dial glass is much thicker and so stronger than on a Grundig for example. When I bought my 6 I asked the seller on ebay.de to take pack the chassis separately. When the 2 boxes arrived. The cabinet was broken, but fortunately it had only separated at the glue joints. Also the radio was no longer working because it had been p…

Chassisrätsel
BeitragI know the mystery is solved, but this is my deduction: 1) One way you can tell the SABA 6 series from the 7 series is the round IF coils. So it could be clearly a 6 series or earlier. 2) It is push-pull EL84 output, so it could also be a Freiburg 3DS or Freiburg 6. 3) It is not a 3DS because the ferrite antenna system is different. 4) So it is Freiburg 6. The reason I chose to get a Freiburg 6 were I think the glass dial is not as nice on a 7. The round 6 IF coils are more attractive than the r…

Freiburg 3DS vs. Bodensee 3DS
Beitragradiomeister, there are better and worse single ended amplifiers, just as there better and worse push-pull amplifiers. However under optimal conditions, I tend to agree with Radioästhet that there may be something special about single ended. All the theoretical reasons are against single ended, and engineers love to tell you why it is not good. However, reality sometimes does not bear out these theoretical benefits of push-pull. People talk about how push pull cancels even order harmonic distort…

Freiburg 3DS vs. Bodensee 3DS
Beitrag:wiebitte: Does anyone know why the Freiburg 6-3D does not have an ultralinear output stage? This seems like a step backwards. Was this part of a cost reduction program? The 6-3D was less costly obviously than the 3DS, but it seems against SABA's approach to economize on its top model. An ultralinear output transformer returned in the Freiburg 7 model.

nightbear, A friend also has a Freiburg W II, but sadly his coaxial's woofer started to buzz (rubbing of voice coil). It is out for examination at a vintage speaker specialist in California. I hope he can repair it, but I am afraid that it is very hard to re-center the voice coil in the magnet gap--the whole assembly is glued. So, I am watching ebay.de for a replacement. His tone control switch is also partly broken, but still functioning although it has no more click stops. Luckily, my Meersbur…

This is the Freiburg W III. It's not black; it's just the photo. Although a black W III would look very nice I think. You can see an "elephant skin" effect from age in the lacquer on the right. So, one day it would be nice to re-finish the case. Same discolorations as the other radios in the speaker cloth. 4248433888_887d50d720_o.jpg SABAs together: it seems like the action of the speakers over time actually draws dirt into the cloth. 4247572165_b54360a6ea_o.jpg

Schöne Bescherung !
BeitragWhat a beauty. It is interesting that these pre-war radios have a "modernist", almost architectural look that was given up for more conventional rounded corners in the post -war models. To me, this series of pre-war radios are the most attractive SABAs. It's a pity they aren't so practical today.

Freiburg 3DS vs. Bodensee 3DS
BeitragThis is the "eternal" single-ended push-pull debate. The Meersburg W2 does have a magic sound, but the Freiburg W III is simply amazing. It is true that for long hours of listening, single ended seems less tiring.

On a different subject, I saw a website with nice pictures of the SABA factory production process as well as packing the radios for shipping in wooden crates--a practice that should be still followed today for safe shipping. However, I lost the link to that website. Does anyone have or know where those pictures can be found?

Thank you nightbear and radiomeister. And I am sorry for my big pics deltamike55. I was lucky that the Meersburg's tone control switch is intact, and still clicks. I know two others with W II radios and neither of theirs still click. The Meersburg is a special radio with a special sound, although the reception is not like the Freiburgs; I also have a W III. radiomeister, I would have agreed with you about the original condition approach until I saw the spectacular restorations some members have …

Hi all Saba fans! :winker: I am sorry to post in English :shame: , but I am a Saba fan from the other side of the Atlantic. I want to now get my small Saba collection into top condition. My radios are all in nice original condition aesthetically (but electrically restored), but having seen some members of the forum's total approach to restoration (nightbear's Freiburg W3 for just one example), I feel that I need to take steps towards getting near that level of perfection to bring out the beauty …
