I just noticed this old topic and can tell you my experience with the grill cloth. When I clean it I just leave it attached to the backboard but staple it down on its edges so that it won't detach from the backboard if the fabric becomes unglued when it is immersed in water. Don't ask me how I know that can happen. Of course remove the speakers first. Use many staples along the edge. After drying, if the fabric did not get unglued, you can remove the staples. I know this is an old thread but I am interested in whether you found the cause of your problem. If not, this is how I would try to narrow down the stage that is causing it. Have you tried connecting an external source of audio such as a CD player. If the problem still exists then that would reduce the area of concern to the audio amplifier section. I would still check ECC83 with a tube tester or try another one. It is a two section tube and sometimes one section goes bad and causes distortion. …

BeitragJust a follow up. I found the problem. One of the capacitors I replaced (C33) is the type with 4 leads... two for the signal and two for grounding for stray capacitance. I usually have no problem replacing these capacitors with a regular axial capacitor. The schematic doesn't show it but this cap also provides the ground connection for R37 which is part of the bias for the grid of ECL82. The bias for the grid was way off. BeitragOne thing I can add. I removed the ECL 82 tube and measured the voltage at the plate pin (6). The voltage was around 210VDC which is about right. I wonder if the ECL 82 is bad? Perhaps a thermal problem .

BeitragGreetings: I have Villingen 9 that has a problem with low B+ voltage and loss of sound output under a particular condition. B+ at turn on is about 167Vdc on the plate of ECL 82 (pin 6). It should be about 200Vdc. I have replaced the main filter capacitors but left the Power supply rectifier in place. There is just a few volts drop across it so it doesn't appear to be a problem. When I turn on the radio it works and if I don't turn the Bass potentiometer (P3) it will continue to work on MW and UK…

Thank You Hans: That clears it up for me. I have replaced the paper capacitors in FM 12 unit but stereo separation is good so I will not adjust it. Lissajous patterns are not something I have tried on my oscilloscope anyway. This is the first radio I have seen that adjusts the coupling of the IF transformers before peaking the primary and secondary. I suppose it makes the adjustment more accurate . Greetings: I want to check the FM alignment on my Saba Breisgau 12 ( Same as Meersburg 11). Reading the instructions, it looks like the first step for the FM IF transformers is to adjust the degree of coupling between the primary and secondary. If that is correct, how many turns do I rotate the screw? Do I turn clockwise or counterclockwise for step 1 ( 1. Adjust coupling subcritical with K 501/3) ? One other question. BeitragPeter: Your suggestion was correct. I found that U12 was getting grounded to the contact next to it which is a ground connection. It wasn't a direct short but I measured about 40Kohms. As you said it may be a carbon path. That was enough to cause the high current in that circuit. Thank you again for your help.

BeitragPeter: Yes, I think the problem has something to with the U12 connection. I disconnected it and the radio will power up properly on FM with the correct voltage across the 5Kohm resistor when I use the FM band. However, when using MW, the voltage is quite high again with too much current going through the resistor. Do you know anything about this particular circuit that would help me to figure out the problem? Thanks for any advice. John

BeitragI am having a problem with my Freiburg WIII and I am hoping to get some sugeestions to solve it. In the attached photos, the 5Kohm resistor marked with yellow is burning up when I use the radio. I tested the circuit and the entire plate voltage for the ECH81 tube is appearing across this resistor. That is too much current ( about 4ma). This problem was intermittant at first but is happening continuously now. The radio will work for a minute or so but eventually the resistor burns up. I am hoping…

Things were done differently in those days. The other thing I noticed was the fact that there are 3 transformers. The power transformer; the output transformer and another one that seems to be associated with the audio filtering system. No, the links you gave me seem to only show the larger type which are used primarily for the the dial ilumination. I just thought that someone here may have found a source for the much smaller lamps which illuminate the keys on my Freiburg WIII from 1952.
