    An offer of help

Bryan McAlley - - English speaking corner

    Beitrag

I have been very grateful to forum members (especially Achim) for the time they have given to my problem with my Saba radio. One way I can repay their generosity is to offer any help you may require with vintage British radios and/or or radiograms. I have a vast collection of data for most makes and models and loads of experience restoring them. I appreciate that this is "off subject" for SABA, but hope that the forum moderators will allow this offer to remain here! Please contact me via PM if y…

OK - getting there! Found the 200uF capacitor (difficult to miss, as it's huge!) removed it and wired in another. No improvement. Put the old one back and refitted the S/M relay and - presto! It worked again. So - somewhere there was a dry joint/ poor connection. I doubt if I'll ever find out where! Meanwhile the ON/OFF relay is still a bit sticky, so I'm going to have another go at that and then clean all the relays/contacts I can (especially the tuning advance mechanism ) as they all look a bi…

Well - no luck, Achim..... There is no voltage evident between these two points (I'm assuming that's what you mean?) when the S/M button is pressed. I've also tested from the 260V point to the chassis - still nothing. So - just as well I haven't dismantled the relay, as it appears to be an "electrical" problem? Bryan

OK - I have located the S/M relay - here it is: http://saba-forum.dl2jas.com/bildupload/P1010348%20(Medium).JPG R615 (33 ohms) is the black tubular wirewound resistor and R614 (6.8Kohms) is the white component in the foreground. Both have been removed and test OK. I cannot locate the elusive ("schwer fassbar" in German - I think!) C616 - the 200uF electrolytic. If anybody knows where it is located on this chassis, I would be most grateful! Otherwise - and this is my next step - I will have to un…

Got it - what an incredible resource!!!! Bryan

OK - that will keep me out of mischief for while!! Achim - please can you tell me how to find this: Home / Geraete / S / Saba / Service Manuals / Roehrenradios / Freiburg Vollautomatic 18 Stereo I don't see "Geraete" anywhere on the home page...... Bryan

Well this "piece of cake" has many capacitors in it!!! What's the secret (in the absence of a component layout diagram) to tracking down C616?? Bryan

The problem was indeed the relay which sits next to the mains transformer - it was sticking, so I removed it and cleaned it and lubricated it. All is well now! Now - on to the speech/music switch problem. I have the scehmatic, and just need to work out the location of the M/S relay and assoaciated resistors. I guess that the numbers below it on the schematic (14 & 23) refer to corresponding tags on the actual chassis? Bryan

Thanks Achim - I have already soaked some paper in deoxidiser and used that to clean the faces of the contacts you have shown. I have done the same with the contacts behind both the ON/OFF and M/S switches as well. I will now clean and lubricate all the other parts. I intend to get the ON/OFF switch working first before looking at the M/S problem! Thanks again, Bryan

Success - here are some more: http://saba-forum.dl2jas.com/bildupload/P1010341%20(Medium).JPG http://saba-forum.dl2jas.com/bildupload/P1010342%20(Medium).JPG

    No - that didn't work - let's try this!! http://saba-forum.dl2jas.com/bildupload/P1010343%20(Medium).JPG

OK - I have found the ON/OFF problem! The relay operated by the ON/OFF switch is sticking I have taken some photographs, but I am afraid that I can't work out how to upload them!! I have gone to the upload link and successfully uploaded them, but not sure how I embed them in this text! If somebody could advise me how to do that, I will do so!! I really need to know if it is OK to apply some light machine oil to the sticking part of the relay mechanism please? As always. many thanks! Bryan Here i…

    Thanks! Bryan

Achim - very many thanks! Yes - I guessed that the S/M and ON/OFF worked separately. I will check both resistors and the mechanical condition of the ON/OFF switch as suggested. I won't be doing that for a few days as I have another (far less interesting!) project to complete first, but will keep the forum up to date with progress. Meanwhile, I have registered with the download section of the forum - I am not sure where I would find the schematic for the FR18; is it under "Datenblaetter und Dokum…

Ah Dieter, but most of you are in Germany! So - when I get stuck with this, I shall ask you all for help!! Bryan

  • Benutzer-Avatarbild

Thank you Dieter. In fact the S/M switch failed about a month ago - before the ON/OFF switch! I was not too worried about it as the rest of the switches were OK. But then the ON/OFF switch failed. I have the schematic from the RadioMuseum site and will have a look at it again before attempting the repair. I was just wondering if any other FR18 owner had had the same problem? Bryan

I am about to try to repair two problems with my FR18. They are similar. i) The Speech/Music button no longer operates; and ii) The On/off button not longer operates. I think that each button is connected to a relay and that I need to look at both relays first. Before I start working on this, I would be very grateful for any advice! (I will now try to translate this into German using Google, but the results may not be very good!!) Very many thanks, Bryan Ich bin zu versuchen, zwei Probleme mit m…
