Interesting personal opinions! I cannot opine directly on the comparison above, since I have only a 3DS, but not a Bodensee. Each system offers different characteristics that can please or not please the individual listener. The 3DS offers not only gegentakt, but "Ultralinear" performance, which makes the pentodes act more as triodes. Low distortion, so truer reproduction is the benefit. The powerful single EL12 as found for the Bodensee would provide rich even-order harmonics by its very nature…

Zitat: „nightbear postete In cases 2 and 3 it´s a different matter. Some Distributor in the US may have ordered transition kits from Saba without the dialglass - or maybe they were available only without it - just to save on shipping costs or because they wanted to avoid the additional work caused by replacing the glass and align the whole FM Box to "synchronize" scale and variometer. I´m sure that it´s not because all the US dialglasses broke and were replaced by european glasses...“ Hello Achi…

I agree also with Achim. The condensers shown appear exactly built as the "paper-in-oil" condensers as used by the military at that time- and also found in some top radios from USSR, such as the "Mir 52." If that is the actual case, and this fine Saba were my own, I would examine them electrically for "leakage." Both electrically and physically. I will bet there will be no appreciable "leakage" indicated by the messgeraete. If all is found OK with them. I would leave them in place. Simply my own…

Zitat: „Schrottsammler postete Hi Dennis, was your DIY project successfully ???“ Hi Heiner, No- Not quite yet. Perhaps as the Winter comes, I will bring the little "Unimat" machine to my table and make the special tool for cutting the holes in the metal foil. ...So busy with the 3DS chassis/ funktion restaurt and ("between the raindrops") trying to complete two other radios......(2 X Koerting!) :kopfstand: So, you see here....Not just one at a time. http://home.roadrunner.com/~densradios/Zwei_Ko…

Hello Heiner, Peter and others, Yes Heiner, that photo shows the same dialscale of the model WIII from the collection photos of Dale Steel that I mentioned above. Thank you for downloading and posting it here for all to view. At one time, I was unable to open that collection photo, though I am a valid member of RMorg. Possibly it was just a temporary problem for me then? What are the chances of knowing that four- (2X WIII and 2X 3DS) radios residing in North America showing the "domestic" Europe…

Hallo Achim. Thank you for the compliment and your thoughts of the Endlagenschalter concept. I sincerely wish my observations of both the chassis and schematic proves that I am missing some knowledge of an early variant of this end-of-travel circuit in question. I had considered a motor current interrupt or reduction/ biasing of the self-latching Stuerwippe holding coil, but both physically stalling the motor and viewing the schematic did not yield to me any other ideas. The only adjustments I s…

Hello all Saba fans! So, I have almost completed my restoration of my 3DS chassis. Although it did not require the extent of work as that recently accomplished by Joerg and Achim, (RoehrenRadios Mono) this was a "rough" example requiring some extensive cleaning, (pressure spraying) rust removal, repainting and total replacement of all Elkos and paper capacitors. Unfortunately, this example had some replacement capacitors installed before I acquired it, so I could only "restuff" a portion of the …

Hallo Joerg and others: Nice to have read you fixed the tastenlampchen problem with the cleaning of the paint from the (masse) ground point. Volker has good advice to inject the I.F. (ZF) signal at the control grid of the ECH81 in order to isolate the no UKW receipt issue either to the ZF, ratio-detektor or within the UKW vorsatz. Actually, you can also inductively inject this ZF frequency by placing a metallic sleeve over the mixer/osz tube (EC92) then connected to your signal generator output,…

Hallo Joerg and Fellows: I can clearly see another very fine restoration coming soon for the Freiburg6-3D! My compliments! Good work. (Now I return to the repair of the Endlagenschalter Kreis for my 3DS...) Gruesse Dennis

Hallo Heiner, Yes, this is the part I had searched for. I will soon have the accurately reproduced part mailed to here. I must laminate some metal foil to the one side of this panel and make a cutting tool to accurately cut the many holes in this metal foil, since the producer of this part can not use his laser to cut the metals and temper board material together. This should not be a problem. I was very fortunate to buy this very tired and abused Saba 3DS. (305 Euros + 85 versand.) There are ve…

Thank you for looking, however I have located a source to accurately reproduce this panel with a laser cutting technique. It is being produced at this time. kind regards, Dennis D.

Hallo Deiter, and thank you for looking for this item. Honestly, I don't know if the bottom panel will be the same for other years of Freiburg. I haven't received the radio itself yet. It is on its way to my house this coming week. Included with this radio will be an accurate tracing (drawing) of this missing part, drawn from another 3DS which is in the collection of the seller. Then I can know the dimensions. Kind regards, Dennis

Hallo everyone, and I thank you for the responses to my questions. That advice reassures me of the possibility that the example of the 3DS I have shown in the photo contains its original (or at least bona fide and proper) speakers. Perhaps now, I might be lucky to acquire a fair, restorable and affordable (to me) example of this fine model from Saba. I hope! I also had observed the mitteltoen speakers as a variant in some examples of the 3DS, which had also added to my wonder and confusion. Than…

Hello Friends of Saba! I have a question regarding the originality of the main speakers as found in an example of the model 3DS. Please take a look here: http://home.roadrunner.com/~densradios/Saba3DS_Speakers.jpg This photo was sent to me from a highly regarded German radio expert here in the U.S.A. He owns two examples of the model 3DS, with both showing dissimilar speaker magnet designs, as depicted in the photo. Is it possible that Saba had different speakers for the original installation in…

Congratulations, Achim! You performed one of the finest chassis restorations I have seen. I have been told by others that my chassis cosmetics were good, but you have taken this process to a higher level.

Greetings All Saba Fans. I have followed this thread with interest as I am in the process of restoring a model WIII also. Similarly, this radio had exhibited the problem of leakage (arcing) of the Pertinax involving one of the contacts U9 and the adjacent connecting post .(Tastenaggregat) The opposite end of the strip U9-12, as previously discussed, also has high voltage potentials on adjacent terminals. The radio here had shown a previous "floating in air" repair to the terminal post (lug) conc…
