Freiburg Automatic 6-3D - Tuning Cord replacement?

Hello from England! I am very glad to find a Saba forum, and hope the group can help us with a restoration problem on a Freiburg Automatic 6-3D.

I acquired this beautiful Saba in about 1998 from friends in Böblingen. Since that time it has been in the roof of my Parent's house. A few weeks ago my Father started to restore the radio. Here is the status now...

      a) The output transformer has been replaced (Hammond 125E).

      b) Output stage, including feedback and both tone controls, working well. Very clear undistorted sound.

      c) All significant capacitors replaced as have some high value resistors.

      d) EL84 x 2 , ECC83 x 1, ECL80 x 1 and EABC80 x 1 have been replaced.

      e) Selenium rectifier remade using 1N4007s, and 100R dropper introduced into HT+. Voltages a trifle low albeit ECC83 first triode anode is high but within operational limits.

      f) Auto tuning operational but giving weird speaker noise when dropping out to manual mode.

      g) Stations heard on all bands including FM without external aerial.

The status is looking good right now - except for one piece of trouble. A tuning drive cord has just broken. My father has this to say...

      "
The heap has unstringed itself in as much as there is a shaft connecting the tuning knob with the motor via a clutch? On that shaft there is a small pulley around whch there should be string which goes to a much larger pulley via another small pulley. The large pulley is located behind the 'auto on/off light' and drives the vhf gubbins. String just snapped as it was tuning so my guess is that its most likely perished.
      All other strings/wires ok.
To fix -it needs 1) Brain
      2) Thin fingers
      3) Eyes
      4) Any help from net i.e

I have asked him to take some pictures. We would both be extremely grateful if anybody can provide diagrams or photographs of this cord arrangement so that we can correctly replace the cord.

This is the first Saba either of us has seen. We have nicknamed it "The Monster" :)

I will try to send some photographs later.

      Many thanks,
      Richard
Hi again - Dad has been busy with pen and paper, and here is a drawing of the broken cord... (hope this works)...

It is the drive cord that connects tuning knob shaft to variable capacitors in the enclosure on right hand side of the chassis that holds the EC92s.

I will start a new thread in due course to document some other aspects of the restoration, in particular the tranformer replacement which worked out rather well.

      All the best,
      Richard
Very many thanks Schrottsammler (scrap collector? -yes me too) for the very helpful drawing. All it needs now is somebody with thin fingers to do some disassembly and threading-up. I think that will be me next time I visit.

I guess 3 or 4 turns around the shaft will be correct?

      Thanks,
      Richard

      ps. Dad just emailed this...

      "Hi Rich,
That really is brilliant. Yes it is excellent, The broken cord is indicated as (2)
Please shower the contibuter with thanks. I was quite distraught when the cord broke after all that work.

      Yes - your nimble fingers!!

      Hi Richard,

the original cord usually is about 0.5 mm in diameter. Saba sometimes made 2 windings around the shaft sometimes 3.
So 3 windings should be perfect if you´re using a replacement-cord that is 0.5 mm or more.
I sometimes use thinner cord (0.3 mm) and have found 4 windings to be necessary to get enough friction.

So good luck fiddling around with the cord and don´t forget to show us some pics here when you´re done :)

      cheers mate
